Wolf Industrial Systems introduced the latest of its customized high performance video graphics products. The multifunctional ATI Mobility Radeon E4690 based XMC Graphics Processor Module (GPM) is emblematic of Wolf’s commitment to combining high performance with greater application, reduced power, and extended temperature range for its Aerospace, Naval, Military, and Industrial OEM requirements.
The XMC-E4690-VO is the outcome of a collaborative partnership with AMD, ALT Software, and Channel One designed to ensure seamless production and delivery of advanced GPM’s for the Video Graphics Market. This partnership capitalizes on Wolf’s rapid Video Card customization and referencing combined with AMD’s industry leading production of High Performance Ruggedized PCIe Graphics, ALT’s expertise in delivering reliable RTOS & DO-178 Software, and Channel One’s known capacity for ensuring component viability and availability.
The XMC-E4690-VO is one of a family of several video graphic solutions powered by the ATI Mobility Radeon E4690, enabling customers to consider unique AMD product solutions with consideration to performance versus power-usage. With 512MB of embedded GDDR3 memory and power requirements typically less than 16 watts, the Mobility Radeon E4690 is targeted at Military, Aerospace, Naval, and Industrial customers requiring extreme high performance 2D and 3D graphics solutions. Video Graphic Processors and board solutions are available in excess of 10 years for XMC-E4690-VO components which are stored in multiple geographic locations in environmental and security controlled warehousing. In addition, Wolf Industrial Systems offers its OEM customers the ability to customize their designs by implementing Xilinx FPGA and new component technology enhancements.
A significant and unique capability of the ATI Mobility Radeon E4690 is the implementation of “Crossfire”, the ability to use two graphic processors in tandem. Wolf is releasing a Crossfire enabled 6U VPX processor board with two XMC sites, which implements the new AMD Opteron quad-processor running at 2.4GHz.
The XMC-E4690-VO is a conduction cooled XMC single wide, full-length mezzanine card mounted on an innovative PCIe carrier card. This unique carrier card allows customers to rapidly evaluate the performance and power capabilities of the GPM. The carrier card can be installed into basic ‘commercial-off-the-shelf’ desktop systems to enable ease of application development.

The GPM’s multiple applications include supporting OpenGL 2.0 commands, executing specified graphics draws, and output video. The ATI Mobility Radeon E4690 supports many different resolutions, refresh rates, and output formats. A wide range of supported Graphics functions include rotation, translation, scaling, tessellation, raster, texturing, transforming, lighting, fog, and shading. The system uses OpenGL for the graphics-processing interface.

The XMC video card is based on the AMD/ATI Mobility Radeon E4690 graphics processing unit (GPU) with 512MB of on chip GDDR3 SDRAM. Reflective of Wolf’s emphasis on multiple applications, it has two independent display controllers each of which support a display monitor with interlaced and non-interlaced modes. This XMC video card has x8 lanes PCIe interface on the XMC P15 connector allowing for exceptionally high processing and performance. Conduction cooling is compliant with ANSI/VITA 20-2001.
The XMC-E4690-VO GPM is a model of versatility and choice. It supports two dual-link TMDS outputs, one from the TMDS interface, and one from a modified LVDS interface. In addition, it can be configured to two single-link TMDS outputs from the TMDS interface. The TMDS interface is routed through the XMC P16 connector. The LVDS output supports dual-link, routed through the PMC P14 connector, and can be configured to a dual-link TMDS output or two DisplayPort outputs. The GPM can be configured to use the TMDS interface or a modified LVDS interface for the DisplayPort, giving the customer a very flexible way to build hardware. The DisplayPort’s differential signals are routed to both the XMC P16 and PMC P14 connectors. The GPM supports one HDMI port, which uses the TMDS interface with signals routed to the XMC P16 connector.
The XMC-E4690-VO GPM’s versatility is further enhanced by Wolf’s exclusive I/O Remapping technology. The GPM can rearrange the pin configuration of the XMC connectors, thus expanding compatibility with a wide variety of ‘on the market’ solutions.
The energy efficient XMC-E4690-VO GPM utilizes only the +5V as the main power rails, and the +3.3V as the secondary power rails. Consistent with Wolf’s commitment to energy efficiency, typical power usage is less than 12 watts for the standard configuration of this GPM, well below the market average. Wolf stands ready to customize the power needs configuration to meet the specific requirements of its OEM partners.
The XMC-E4690-VO GPM is specifically intended to operate under extreme conditions. It is ideally suited for a wide variety of military, naval, medical, aerospace, commercial, and industrial applications. An intensive component selection and manufacturing process, combined with rigorous testing, ensures that the GPM will be free of maintenance issues related to fatigue, deterioration, component variability, or aging throughout its service life when exposed to rugged environments. The GPM has an anticipated 20-year service life assuming use within specified operating ranges.
